The sinking of the Montevideo Maru is believed to have claimed the lives of more than 1000 Australian POWs and civilians nearly double the number killed in the attack on HMAS Sydney.
The families of those who went down with the ship are calling on the federal government to fund a search for the wreck off the west coast of the Philippines as John Howard's government did in the hunt for what remained of the HMAS Sydney.
ninemsn is joining with the families to petition the government to this end.
If you believe the government should fund the search, add your name to the online petition below. You will need to enter your full name in the "Nickname" field and your suburb in the "Location" field.

my father G.W.LANHAM.VX26758 was listed as being on of this ship.what peace of mind it would bring to all the relitives of those missing men when their final resting place is found.
Shocking to think that I can’t recall ever learning of this tragedy in my school days but now that I think of it there may have been a Midnight Oil song that gives mention. Many a tax dollar heads abroad in foreign aid, perhaps a little of that can be spent a little closer to home for what is surly considered by all to be of significant importance. It would seem that little Johnny didn’t mind leaving a large portion of the nations soul adrift. Mr. Rudd…what say you?
It's time to provide some closure for all the families that were affected by this tragedy. Support those who supported us when we most needed them.
what a great idea, as simple as that i don't think that it needs more explination than that.
My family have been told that my Uncle Harry was seen boarding the Montevideo Maru and I fully support those who are trying to determine the resting place of our family member.
