The designer who created Michelle Obama's inauguration ballgown is better known for making dolls in the image of famous transvestites.
Style bible W says Jason Wu "isn't even a full-time fashion designer" and an unknown in the industry — until now.
But the Taiwan-born has become a fixture on US morning talk shows as the public clamours to learn more about the man who designed the First Lady's glittering white gown.
"I really didn't know she'd be wearing it until I saw her on TV last night, just like everyone else," he told Teen Vogue.
"I dropped everything when she walked out — and, yes, I did cry a little bit.
"It's an incredible moment for me."
Wu was perhaps best known for creating a range of RuPaul dolls for top-end retailer Integrity Toys, with some of his creations selling for up to $300.
RuPaul is 2m tall celebrity transvestite who has appeared in films and TV shows, and models make-up for the MAC chain.
But Wu looks set to graduate to working with living dolls — and apparently relishes the change.
"Working with dolls, you know, they don't have a personality — they don't talk," Wu told W's Venessa Lau last year.
"Meeting the girls who wear my clothes helps."
