The driver of a car that smashed into a power pole in Sydney's west, killing his passenger, was unlicensed, police say.
The passenger, a 17-year-old male, died at the scene of the crash on Gurney Road, Villawood, about 3pm (AEDT) on Tuesday.
The driver, also a 17-year-old male, remains in a critical condition in Liverpool Hospital, police told AAP on Tuesday night.
A statement from NRMA CareFlight said live powerlines fell on the car and prevented access to the men for a short time.
The driver suffered fractures, bleeding and a head injury and had to be given a blood transfusion while he was trapped in the wreckage for about an hour.
