Customs officers in southern Italy have seized six to seven tonnes of high-grade explosives en route from Iran to Syria, the Italian ANSA news agency said on Tuesday, quoting sources.

Investigators said the RDX explosives, found at the port of Gioia Tauro in the Calabria region, were hidden in a container transporting powdered milk.

They did not, however, believe the military explosive material was destined for use by the Mafia.

Powerful bombs used to kill two magistrates in 1992 and 1993 as well as attacks in Milan, Florence and Rome all contained RDX.
